Original Item: one-of-a-kind. A very nice named U.S. Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer sword marker marked by WM Read & Sons Boston Mass. Approximate 30" long blade, with a fine leather ray skin grip with brass wire warp and excellent patina to the brass knuckle guard, cross guard, and pommel. Overall this sword is in very nice condition with a bright nickel blade. Shows some wear on scabbard. However, the best aspect is that this sword is named to a known officer in the Union that fought and was killed in the U.S. Civil War.

Major Charls Jarvis served in the 9th Vermont infantry, was stationed in Boston in the early part of 1863 and was killed in action on December 1st, 1863 in North Carolina. He was a captured on September 15th 1862 in Harper’s Ferry and held in Richmond, VA. Included in the purchase of this sword are more than 30 pages of high quality copies of the original paper work with Jarvis name and signature including muster roles, after action reports, correspondence, letters, as well as a copy of an original tin type photograph of Jarvis himself. A wonderful research project with loads of potential.
