Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an exceptional example of a true model 1890 Springfield Carbine. The 1890 model designation indicates that this original 1873 Carbine was completely upgraded by the army after 1887. The upgrades made in 1887-1890 were as follows:

- Stock replacement, unmarked, with compartment for cleaning rod and broken shell extractor.

- Butt plate with sliding access cover.

- Low arch breechblock dated 1873.

- Buffington rear sight with correct carbine "C" marking on sight leaf.

- Rear sight protector.

We believe that the upgrades were undertaken at Fort Riley, Kansas. Cosmetically, this carbine shows very little use, with a near mint 1873 lock plate. The stock retains its original oil finish. The bore is strong, bright and shiny. All mechanical functions are normal. The jointed cleaning rod is included. The serial number falls into the correct range for Model 1890 upgrade modifications.

Details of the aforementioned modifications were referenced from the Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch publication, "The .45-70 Springfield", fifth edition.
