Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an inert training rifle and it is impossible to convert it into a live round firing weapon. It is not made using any original parts and is completely inert, made from cast aluminum, plastic, and some molded and machined resin parts. These are very hard to come by, especially with all the parts still intact and on the original display stand. Trainers like these were made in house at one of the U.S. Military training aid centers, and were used in classrooms used as a way to familiarize service members with the inner workings of the M16A1 Rifle, which was in use for decades as a front line weapon, and is still in service in many areas today. Not really intended to stand up to any type of rigorous use, these were usually disposed of once damaged or obsolete, so they are extremely rare.

This 2:1 scale example looks to have been made in the late 1960s or 1970sm and is based on the M16A1 variant introduced in 1967, based on the handgrip style. Unlike the previous example we had, this is a cutaway example that actually shows the internal components as they function in a real example. The safety, bolt, magazine, recoil spring, forward assist, etc. are all present and move. When the dummy magazine filled with solid plastic dummy bullets is loaded into the gun, it can even cycle, ejecting the plastic rounds. Even better, it completely breaks down in an almost identical fashion to a real M16A1! This was an invaluable training tool for familiarizing service members with the weapon system prior to getting their hands on the real thing.

Condition is excellent, showing only light wear to the exterior and interior components. As cutaway it features many highlighted areas, making it a very attractive display piece, and at 77 inches (6ft 5 inches) in overall length, it is VERY impressive! These are extremely hard to find, and this is the only example like this that we have had or seen. Ready to display!

PLEASE NOTE: This item will be shipped with the upper receiver & barrel removed from the lower receiver & butt stock. The two pins on the lower must be pulled out before it can be reassembled.

The M16
The M16 rifle (officially designated Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16) is a family of military rifles adapted from the ArmaLite AR-15 rifle for the United States military. The original M16 rifle was a 5.56×45mm automatic rifle with a 20-round magazine.

In 1964, the M16 entered US military service and the following year was deployed for jungle warfare operations during the Vietnam War. In 1969, the M16A1 replaced the M14 rifle to become the US military's standard service rifle. The M16A1's improvements include a bolt-assist, chrome-plated bore and a 30-round magazine.

In 1983, the US Marine Corps adopted the M16A2 rifle and the US Army adopted it in 1986. The M16A2 fires the improved 5.56×45mm (M855/SS109) cartridge and has a newer adjustable rear sight, case deflector, heavy barrel, improved handguard, pistol grip and buttstock, as well as a semi-auto and three-round burst fire selector. Adopted in July 1997, the M16A4 is the fourth generation of the M16 series. It is equipped with a removable carrying handle and Picatinny rail for mounting optics and other ancillary devices.

The M16 has also been widely adopted by other armed forces around the world. Total worldwide production of M16s is approximately 8 million, making it the most-produced firearm of its 5.56 mm caliber. The US military has largely replaced the M16 in frontline combat units with a shorter and lighter version, the M4 carbine.
